Last week, over 600 students from across the state participated in Georgia Power’s “Klondike Day”.
“Students enjoy visiting Klondike because they get to interact with Georgia Power lineworkers, hear about energy careers, and learn how they can become part of Georgia Power's summer internship program that could possibly lead to a full-time employment,” explains Cedric Sheffield, Workforce Development Specialist. “For students looking for an exciting career, linework is a great option. Lineworkers are in high demand in Georgia and the Southeast – plus most lineworker programs are tuition free with tuition assistance available through Georgia's HOPE Career Grant.”
From bucket trucks to transformer stations and safety training, students learned about lineworker, meter worker, and network underground responsibilities, as well as required skills for each career during events in Atlanta and Savannah. Students engaged in stations that gave insight into the "Day in the Life" of skilled trades positions at Georgia Power.
Joycelyn White, a school counselor from Twiggs County, shared the importance of career exposure events. “Klondike Day gave some of Twiggs County High School’s brightest scholars insight on careers available to them immediately following graduation. Exposure is key to shifting mindsets and broadening their views.”
Georgia Power’s Education & Workforce Development team focuses on introducing Georgia educators and students to high demand careers and technical programs that offer certifications aligned with those careers. In 2022, the team interacted with more than 145,000 students from across Georgia. Learn more here.
